NANO alumina hydrate of Saint-Gobain, USA, adds excellent strength and flame retardancy to Nylon-6
Tomoe Engineering Co., Ltd. and ITC Japan Ltd.-the minerals/chemicals trading company and the subsidiary of the American clay manufacturer, ITC, USA-jointly market NANO alumina hydrate (nano boehmite) developed by Saint-Gobain, USA (Worcester, Massachusetts). Acquisition of sole distributorship of the product in Far East by ITC, USA has enabled this.
Saint-Gobain succeeded in producing 15 nano-meter powder, applying special treatment to aluminum hydrate. NANO amlumina hydrate has proved in the test that it reinforces Nylon-6 significantly and gives it flame retardancy much more than the conventional nano composite does. Both companies have already started marketing this new high functional filler by sending samples to prospective users.
New NANO alumina hydrate, CAM9010, has been commercialized by Saint-Gobain, who succeeded in making powder in 15 nano-meter (standard size) by applying special chemical treatment to aluminum hydrate. Saint-Gobain can produce several thousand tons a year with the existing production facilities. Particles in further smaller size are available.
In the test to compare with montmorillonite-type composite, which has been used widely as nylon reinforcement filler, CAM9010 proved to be excellent reinforcement filler for Nylon-6 by increasing flexural and tensile strengths. Properties of the hydrate also gave it superior flame retardancy. It showed better transparency even in a form of the 1mm thick disc. Easy to handle is another advantage: no requirement for prior treatment and excellent dispersion. Further, CAM9010 is supplied at a lower price than montmorillonite-type filler.
Saint-Gobain expects considerable sales growth in Japan whose nano technology industry runs ahead of the world.
